To optimize fuel capacity and sit high and elegant on the backbone, this vintage Sportster gas tank has been fitted up with a low “Frisco” tunnel. It’s known as a Peanut Tank because it adds a custom look to your chopper or bobber while still carrying enough fuel to get you where you need to go. To ensure that every last drop of fuel is consumed, a 1/4″ NPT petcock is installed low and to the left. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, Harley-Davidson produced Sportster tanks, and this version keeps the same shape and size.

Disclaimer

Tanks are pressure-checked at the manufacturer, but it’s a good idea to double-check before painting. Before painting, check the fit of the tank, mounting hardware, petcocks, and gas caps. When the tabs are bolted to the frame, no stress is transferred to them, which can cause the welds to crack. To guarantee an even fit, use leather or rubber washers to shim between the tabs and the backbone if necessary. Do not sand gas tank seams or welded edges; if necessary, apply a thin coat of body filler before painting. Gas tank faults are covered by Elf cycle’s warranty, but the paintwork is not. Before you start painting, make sure your tank is in good condition.
